Personality: To understand Peggy Carter, one must understand exactly how hard her life has been, and how hard she has to fight every day to just keep her current position. She was born in 1921. England didn’t have the economic boom during the 20s that many other countries did, but they suffered the same Great Depression in the 30s. Then World War II began when she was eighteen. On top of all this, she’s a woman, and women, while enjoying more freedom than they had in the previous generation, were very restricted at the time. These were very rough years to be around, and they were her formative years.
Instead of making her pliable, these years made her tough as nails and stubborn as a mule. Peggy learned quickly that nothing in life was going to be easy for her and the world wasn’t going to give her anything, so it was her job to work hard and get what she wanted. She’s a brilliant woman with a knack for codebreaking, subterfuge, strategy, and combat. She put these skills to use during the war, and she would use the brute force of her personality and her credentials to make people respect her despite her sex.
That’s a major component of Peggy’s personality: when something doesn’t go her way, she uses force. Her instinct is to be forceful in serious situations, and if forceful words don’t do the trick, then a fist might. She has learned how to be finessed in social interaction and how to coax what she wants out of people, but when that doesn’t work, she gets frustrated and defaults to brute force. Physicality and her ability to use violence to make other people do what she wants were both very important in the military, where she’d have to punch her subordinates to make them respect her position, and when she is in situations where violence will only make things worse, she relies on a forceful demeanor and personality. She will hound things, pressure people, and refuse to let things go with all the stubbornness of a military woman. Yet even as she does this, she will remain perfectly composed and put together, because she values maintaining control of herself.
Peggy is a woman who fundamentally needs control of her situation. If she can’t be in control of the situation, she will be in control of herself, and she will quickly and efficiently try to figure out how to turn the situation into her favor. This often showcases her tenacity and cleverness, since she will use exercise every bit of control she can get.
These forceful and controlling aspects of her personality can make her seem like a hardass, and that’s an image that she’s happy to keep. She’s pragmatic and understands that people will use every excuse to use her femininity against her, so when she’s in professional situations (or dealing with men in general), she will project a hard, impenetrable exterior. Despite this, she won’t pretend she’s not a woman and values her womanhood, as one can see with the careful care she puts into her appearance and her warmth with other women.
When she’s with fellow women or with men she trusts, she can take off her daily armor somewhat. She has a wry sense of humor, and beneath the layers of seriousness and pragmatism, she has a fiery personality and a strict sense of right and wrong. She doesn’t suffer fools or bullies well, and she wants to protect people who can’t protect themselves. When she loves people, she loves them fiercely and for the rest of her life. She is proud (at times to the point of arrogance) and loyal to a fault to the people she cares about.
Her pride and loyalty combined with her stubbornness sometimes leads her astray. She values the respect of others and is very aware that the slightest misstep will be assigned to her sex and used as a reason to discredit her, so she does not want to show vulnerability to anyone. This translates into an inability to ask for help when she needs it, and once she realizes she really is in over her head, she can be too proud and stubborn to ask for help until someone points out how foolish she is being.
When these things cause her to make mistakes, she can recognize them and pull herself back to the right course, because she wants to be the best person she can be. Ultimately, pragmatism usually wins out over her pride, and she can suffer a good humbling if it means that the mission is completed. As long as she's out there in the field, making the world a better place, she's ready to do anything to get the job done right.
Flavor Abilities:
Being kickass? She has no powers.
Suitability: Peggy has dealt with technology so advanced that it might as well be magic, so she won’t be completely unequipped to deal with weirdness. That said, this is still outside of her comfort zone, and when she’s outside of her comfort zone, she responds by investigating and learning as much as possible so she can have some kind of plan of attack.
This will probably involve mapping out her surroundings, investigating the town, and asking everyone else questions about what they were doing before they were taken.
RP Samples:
Network/action sample on the test drive.
And for a second sample, this one where she's settled in the game:
[Well, this house is nice. Generic, but nice. Like every other house she's found here.
Peggy begins her nightly ritual. She first checks the house for anyone else. When she first got to this place, she had been relieved whenever she found no one. Now, she's just disappointed. It would be nice to have a little company.
Oh well. She checks to see if there's any running water or electricity. None. She changes into clothes left in the dresser and brushes her hair before gathering up blankets and settling down on a bed with her tablet.]
Well, denizens of Norfinbury, I believe it's time for everyone to find shelter. [While she sends her image to the network, she pulls her backpack closer and takes out her notebook.] As usual, I've taken pictures of particular landmarks I've found and filled out the map I've been making further. Here we are.
[She shows her notebook to the camera, showing off the map.] I'll send pictures of the landmarks to anyone who would like to see them. Otherwise, I hope that this helps orient more people to their position in relation to others.
[She puts the notebook down.] In other news, does anyone care for some conversation before bed?
